The Devil has gone by many names over the years since he was kicked out of heaven and became a fallen angel. Mephistopheles, Satan, Old Nick and The Lord of the Underworld are just a few. He usually is portrayed in modern culture as a horned being bent on causing chaos and destruction wherever he goes.
In popular folklore from countries such asGreat BritainandIreland, he is known as a trickster, often trying to outwit his opponents. The Devil even lends his name to geological formations such as a limestone tower on the coast ofEnglandknown as The Devil’s Chimney. The chimney is said to be used by the Devil’s fireplace in his dwelling deep below the ground.
The Devils name costume has also taken on many looks in the movies over the years. From the serious to the comedic, Lucifer has been scaring people and making them laugh at the same time.
In the silent film era, the movie, “Haxan”, in 1922, actor Benjamin Christensen portrays Satan as terrorizing monks and tempting women. In the classic “Angel on my Shoulder”, from 1946 with Claude Rains in the Devils name costume, gets the tables turned on him when gangster Paul Muni blackmails Old Nick.
In 1997, Al Pacino played Satan in, “The Devil’s Advocate”, where he sets his evil sights on lawyer, Keanu Reeves. Peter Stormare gives a creepy and disturbing performance as Lucifer in the 2005 film, “Constantine”. This would be a good movie to watch if you need any ideas on how to act like the Devil.
In the original “Bedazzled” from 1967, a comical approach is taken to Satan as Dudley Moore engages in much mischief with the help of his devilish demon, Lust and Envy, played by Raquel Welch. In the 2000 remake of “Bedazzled”, actress Elizabeth Hurley puts on the Devils name costume and torments poor geek Brendon Frasier as all he wants to do is find true love.
The comedic approach to Satan enters the medium of animation in the movie “SouthPark: Bigger, Longer and Uncut”, from 1999. “SouthPark’ co-creator, Trey Parker, is the voice of a rather timid Satan who finds a friend in a certain former dictator.
The 1959 film, “Santa Claus”, is perhaps one of the most bizarre portrayals of the Devil. In this movie, Lucifer sends one of his henchmen named Pitch to Earth in order to turn children against Santa Claus at Christmas time. If Pitch fails in his mission, Satan will make him eat what he dreads the most, chocolate ice cream. Fortunately, Santa gets some help from the legendary wizard, Merlin the Magician and Christmas is saved.
